L'SHANAH TOVAH
HIGH HOLIDAYS 2009 / 5770
A Rosh Hashanah Meditation 5770
This year the first day of Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat and traditional Jews will only sound the shofar on Sunday. Nevertheless the mitzvah of a “remembrance of teruah” (zichron teruah) applies on Shabbat. How then does one fulfill this mitzvah? By making oneself into the shofar. Perhaps it is precisely on Shabbat that we realize the true significance of sounding the shofar, not as an instrumental, external act but as a spiritually transformative exercise that engages the depths of our being.
On another level, the simplicity of the shofar sound, its primitive, pre-verbal dimension might represent the inarticulate cry of those among us who, having lost the capacity to express themselves in the language of our people, persist in their determination to identify with and establish some connection to our tradition. Indeed, that may explain why it is that the shofar blasts continue to resonate for so many of us.
May the shofar keep on providing that eternal link, and offer us all the possibility of rebirth and renewal.

Hillel at UCLA offers Traditional, Liberal and Orthodox High Holiday services for our students and the community. We look forward to having you join us!
This year, Rosh Hashanah will begin at sundown on Friday, September 18, 2009 and will continue on Saturday, September 19 and on Sunday, September 20. All Rosh Hashanah services will be at Hillel at UCLA. NOTE: Due to high demand, you must register to be guaranteed admission.
Ten days later, Kol Nidre will be chanted on Sunday, September 27, with Yom Kippur continuing until nightfall on Monday, September 28. See the schedule below for locations and further information.
Our services create a spiritual environment conducive to introspection, reflection, study and discussion. On the first night of Rosh Hashanah, each service will be followed by a festive Kiddush. And, on Yom Kippur, following the blowing of the shofar, we offer break-the-fast refreshments.
