On June 1st, 2021, UCLA’s Undergraduate Students Association Council (USAC) voted on multiple resolutions and statements relating to Jewish, Israeli, and Palestinian students, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
We are disappointed with the majority of Councilmembers who continued to ignore the leaders of UCLA’s robust Jewish community. These Councilmembers have consistently exhibited a double standard and selectively listened to their Jewish and Israeli constituents. While Palestinian groups’ exclusionary concerns went entirely unquestioned, Jewish student concerns ended up being consistently discounted.
We reject the idea that one “side” is completely responsible for a decades-long conflict and urge our peers to embrace constructive avenues toward a negotiated resolution of the conflict, including self-determination and security for Jews and Palestinians.
We sincerely thank those Councilmembers who see beyond the false divisions and push back against bias. They represent the highest standard by promoting mutual recognition for all communities at UCLA, understanding that support for one group does not have to come at the expense of another.
These issues and discussions do not end now. We will continue working with USAC as we move forward and into the next school year. We are hopeful that we will be able to create an environment in which every student feels safe and welcome at both UCLA and, more specifically, at Hillel.
The Jewish community at UCLA and around the world is incredibly diverse. We, as student leaders, aim to represent and acknowledge the vast diversity of Jewish voices on our campus. In the days ahead, let us now find strength in our shared Bruin commitment to a campus built on mutual respect, robust debate, and inclusion.
