"The Jewish Claim to the Land of Israel: Absolute or Conditional"
With Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller
Mon. December 13, 5:00 - 6:30pm PT
Online via Zoom. Registration required.
For many of us God's promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (our Patriarchs) serves as the basis and justification for the contemporary Jewish claim to the Land of Israel. Some even speak of a 3000 year old right that grants the Jewish people title to the territory, as if the Biblical text functions as a legal real-estate contract.
In this seminar we will interrogate that claim and provide a meaningful and operational understanding of the promise itself. Following an examination of the import of Rashi's framing assertion and Nahmanides' profound theological response, we will argue that the promise is, indeed, conditional and not absolute. And we will be surprised to discover that the PROMISE holds inner significance of transcendent value.
