Arts Education Lecture: Remembering Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, Terezin Artist and Teacher
For this presentation Dr. Wix will draw on excerpts from numerous interviews she conducted with 11 Holocaust survivors who studied art with Bauhaus-educated artist teacher Friedl Dicker-Brandeis in the Terezin concentration camp between 1942 and 1944. The words and images made by these survivors comprise the excerpts that tell the stories of students' memories of their experiences of art classes in Terezin. The excerpts are grounded in the author's research into memory as sited; the portraiture encounter; and the life lessons that the young art students took from their teacher, Friedl Dicker-Brandeis.
